What had the makings of a Dallas County upset turned into just another night at the ballpark as the No.4 Holtville High Lady Bulldogs scored 10 unanswered runs to upend the visiting Dallas County Lady Hornets 13-3.
The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 3-0 lead using a mixture of small-ball and aggressive baserunning. But the rest of the night belonged to Holtville.
Hannah Ray drew a walk and scored on a Kara Wilson double. Wilson scored when North Florida State signee Kendall Cox reached on an error. Tonibeth Garner (Chattahoochee Valley) singled to clear the bases.
With the game knotted 3-3, Holtville’s offense roared to life, rattling off nine runs on eight hits to take a 12-3 lead at the bottom of the third inning.
Garner singled to lead off the third followed by McKenzie Logan and Cameron Wilson. The three ended up scoring as Ray reached on an error (two runs) and then Wilson cleared the bases on a double that bounced off the wall in centerfield (two more runs). Cox doubled to score Wilson and Chontanee Combs singled to drive home a run and pitcher Dani Oates pushed a run home.
Combs ended the game in the bottom of the fifth. The Alabama State verbal commit springer to thrift on a fielding error and then got herself into a pickle between catcher and third.
She slid into home on the throw back to third.
The Lady Bulldogs are off for the first part of the week and will travel to Tennessee March 28.
