Edgewood Academy’s softball team improved to 18-15 on the year with a Thursday afternoon sweep of Class AAA Hooper Academy.
“We are getting on track the way we should be at this time of year,” said Fawn Sims, coach of the Lady Wildcats.
Kelsey Hartley picked up both wins as Edgewood posted scores of 7-1 and 10-2. She struck out a combined 14 batters in eight and two/thirds innings of work.
“Defensively, we are light years ahead of where we were at this time last year,” said Sims. “We are still making one or two errors a game that cost us a run. But our offense is coming around and we are hitting the ball so well that we can make up for it.”
Katrina Harden, in the two-game series was a combined 6-for-6 with two doubles. Chandler Thornton was a combined 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Caity Jo Lee finished the day 3-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and seven RBIs.
“We are executing our small-ball game,” said Sims. “And we are running the bases a lot smarter than we did last year. And I think that’s a maturity thing. The girls are older now and they are not making the same mistakes they made last year, which cost us runs.”
