Melvin Joseph Hyde Sr., of Wetumpka, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 5, 2013, at the age of 89.
The service to celebrate his life was held at 10 a.m. June 8 with Leak-Memory Chapel in Montgomery officiating.
Mr. Hyde is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irene Thigpen Hyde of Wetumpka; his daughters and their husbands Veda and Rodney Moss of Ball Ground, Ga.; Melba and Freddie Pouncy of Eclectic; Gisele and Billy Echols of Wetumpka; and son and his wife Mel and Delane Hyde of Wetumpka. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Deborah Irene Hyde.
Pallbearers were his grandsons Keith Patterson, Mickey Moncus, Jason Walker, Jared Walker, Brandon Echols, Bryan Echols and Wesley Hyde.
Mr. Hyde was born Feb. 29, 1924, in Coosa County (Parkdale Community) and was the youngest of eight children born to G.W. and Martha Stone Hyde.
He graduated from Goodwater High School in 1942 and enlisted in the Army Air Corp. Mr. Hyde met his future wife in Sylacauga. They were married on April 11, 1945.
Mr. Hyde retired from the Montgomery County School System as the County School Bus Shop Foreman. He also worked in the automotive parts business. He was a carburetor specialist; he and a friend co-owned and operated H&H Electric in Montgomery for many years.
