Area baseballers Showcase bound

A group of Elmore County-area baseball players will step into the summer spotlight after earning places on the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Underclassmen All-Star Teams.

Charlie Crenshaw will join Edgewood’s Chase Laney, Marbury’s Colton Thomas and a pair of Benjamin Russell Wildcats (Caleb Brooks and Zac Rogers) on the Cardinal (South) Team that’s coached by Enterprise-Ozark Community College’s Tim Hulsey.

Baseball players from Rehobeth, the AISA’s Evangel Christian, Thomasville, Carroll-Ozark, Baker, Central-Phenix City, Spanish Fort, Beauregard, Northview-Dothan, Smiths Station, Houston Academy and Thorsby fill out the roster.

Crenshaw batted .333 with a .451 on-base percentage for first-year coach Russ Brooks Indians. He accounted for eight extra-base hits, 12 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.

Laney, pitching behind the Alabama Sports Writers Pitcher (Gage Pregno / Samford) and Player (Baley Hansen / Birmingham Southern) of the Year, posted a 6-1 mark with two shutouts and two saves in 41 and two-thirds innings of work. Through his 21 appearances, Laney fanned 31 batters and posted a 1.34 ERA.

Crenshaw’s teammate, Baker Weldon, has also been chosen to an All-Star squad. Weldon will be a part of the Black Team, coached by Jeff Davis C.C.’s Adam Reed. He joins Benjamin Russell’s Nathan Mitchell, Marbury’s Ben Barret and baseball players from Saraland, Dothan, Mountain Brook, Opelika, Jackson, St. Paul’s, Central Tuscaloosa, UMS-Wright, Jackson, the AISA’s Glenwood, Ashford, Auburn, Charles Henderson, Beauregard and Rehobeth.

Weldon batted .295 on the year with a .632 on-base-plus-slugging percentage. He drove in 22 runs on a combined 24 hits (eight extra-base).

Competition begins Wednesday at Troy’s Riddle-Pace Field. The Cardinal Team (South #1) will take on the Navy Blue Team (North #4) at 11:30. The Columbia Blue Team (South #3) will face off against Forrest Green (North #6) at 5 and then Cardinal will play again against Royal Blue (North #5).

Games will resume Thursday morning beginning at 9.
