Draper Prison burglarizedPublished 2:37pm Monday, July 29, 2013
Alabama State Troopers, K-9 units and other various law enforcement officers were seen trekking in the wooded area behind and near Draper Prison in Elmore County on Monday.
Rumors spread far and wide in regards to what had happened.
“People assumed we had an escapee, but it couldn’t be any further from the truth,” said Brian Corbett, spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Corrections.
In all actuality, what had happened was that Draper Prison was burglarized sometime during the night, according to Corbett.
Evidence shows where someone broke into the radio shop, farm office and the dog kennel, Corbett said.
Taken from the radio office were three laptop computers and four weapons — an AR-15 rifle, two shotguns and a 306 rifle — from the dog kennel.
“We had the K-9 units in the wooded area around the prison looking for the suspect with no luck,” Corbett said.
A Draper employee discovered the burglary around 5 a.m. Monday.
