Alexis Akers is Africa bound. She’s using this weekend’s run to help get her there.
The run, Miles for Missions, is a 5K scheduled for Saturday starting at Gold Star Park.
“We wanted to do something that would get the community involved,” said Akers, a 2013 graduate of Wetumpka High. “There’s a bunch of runners in Wetumpka and this is a great way to get their help and to introduce them to Extreme Outdoors Ministry.”
Eclectic’s Extreme Outdoors Ministry is the sponsor of the event.
Registration is scheduled to start Saturday morning at 6:30. There will be a pre-race devotion / prayer period beginning at 7 with the run scheduled to start at 7:30.
“Registration is on-going,” said Akers. “We are using About-Time-Events. The fee is $30. They can also register the day of the race.”
Proceeds from the event will help fund Akers nine-month mission trip to South Africa.
“I was accepted to Troy. I had a roommate and a room in the dorm,” said Akers, who felt the call for mission-work after attending Disciple Now. “But I decided that God was telling me not to go, but to take this trip.”
While in Africa, Akers will work with kids, something she said she’s good with.
“I’m with them one-on-one,” said Akers. “That’s my passion. That’s what I enjoy doing.”
She’s planning on leaving Sept. 29 and returning June 28.
