Troop 50 gears up for anniversary celebrationPublished 3:48am Tuesday, August 6, 2013
Time is quickly counting down to an event that Gardner Perdue, assistant scoutmaster of Wetumpka Boy Scout Troop 50, hopes will bring together many of those who passed through the ranks of the troop.
“We are hold a Boy Scout Troop 50 Reunion Campfire in honor of our 75th anniversary,” said Perdue.
The gathering is scheduled for Aug. 10 at the Scout Lodge near the Fain Center. Activities will begin at 6 p.m.
“We plan to have several activities going on during the event,” said Perdue. “We will have an old scout campsite set up, there will be dutch oven cooking and more and supper will be available.”
Perdue said all scouts and others ever associated with Troop 50 are invited to join in the anniversary celebration. He added that former Troop 50 scouts are also encouraged to submit photographs from their scouting days.
The troop takes part in a number of community-oriented activities, including its annual retirement of American Flags on June 14.
This year the troop joined forces with the local VFW to hold a joint flag retirement ceremony.
During the ceremony used flags are burned to further honor those who may have or currently serve in the U.S. armed forces.
“The troop was founded March 31, 1938,” said Perdue. “It was first sponsored by the Wetumpka Lions Club and the first Scoutmaster was O.M. Bratton.”
Attendees should bring lawn chairs, memories, stories and scout crafts to share. Former Troop 50 scouts are encouraged to visit the troop’s website or call Perdue at 334-430-2979.
