EA offseason ends FridayPublished 12:00pm Thursday, August 15, 2013
While in the past Edgewood Academy has been able to slide players into vacancies and just reload, this year’s bunch of Wildcats come with a learning curve.
“We’ve got a lot of talent on the field,” said Bobby Carr, coach of the Wildcats. “They are just young. We’ve got (Taylor) Hawthorne at quarterback and he’s got some talented wide receivers. But you’ve got to show them the steps on some of the pass routes. They’re young. They’ve got to learn.”
With this being the final week before the Wildcats kick off the 2013 season for real, Carr hopes to see some consistency.
“That’s what we are working on right now,” said Carr. “In practice you work until you get it done and for us, we are pretty good the second or third time we run through something. But on Friday nights, you don’t get a do-over. You’ve got to get it right.”
The Wildcats will end their offseason Friday night with a Green-White scrimmage at Storrs Field beginning at 6.
“Offensively, I want us to be consistent,” said Carr. “Defensively, we’ve got to learn to do the little things, like pursue the ball on the backside of a play. You can’t just assume that someone is going to make the tackle … things like that.”
Carr did praise the work of his special teams.
“Our kickers are doing a great job,” said Carr. “I think they may step in and bail us out a few times this season.”
The Wildcats, top-ranked in AISA, open the 2013 campaign Aug. 24 at Faulkner against Class AAA Hooper, in the second half of an AISA doubleheader. Glenwood / Escambia Academy kicks things off that afternoon.
FRIDAY’S FOR SCRIMMAGING
