A Prattville man is facing a murder charge following the death of a 13-month-old boy in February.
Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said investigators met with a state forensic pathologist to learn the death of the child was determined to be a homicide.
On Feb. 6 Joey Alan Grizzell, 27, was in his girlfriend’s home on Shelton Place in Deatsville and was asked to watch her 13-month-old son.
Grizzell said he took the child, who was non-responsive at the time, to the grandparents’ house where he told them he “accidently dropped the baby on the kitchen floor” at the residence on Shelton Place.
One of the grandparents called 911 and the baby was later air lifted to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham where it later died from the injuries.
“When our investigators met with the pathologist, they ruled it a homicide given the head trauma and evidence of violent shaking,” Franklin said.
Grizzell was arrested and charged with murder around 9 p.m. Wednesday at his home in Prattville with assistance from the Prattville Police Department.
He is now being held in the Elmore County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
Franklin said his case will be turned over to an Elmore County grand jury the week of Sept. 23.
