That’s what Elmore County Commissioner Stephanie Daniels-Smoke (D5) and the residents in the Crenshaw area saw in a 7.5 acre parcel of land in the community.
A few years ago half of a basketball court was paved at the park to be joined by a pavilion and a baseball diamond. There were a few attractions for smaller children but not many.
Crenshaw Park was in dire need of a facelift.
This is where community members and Daniels-Smoke came forward to seek avenues of income to help give the park that added boost it needed over the years.
On Monday it was announced the county was awarded a $10,000 grant from Mid South RC&D. The grant money will be used to purchase new playground equipment for the park according to county administrator Lynda Feaga.
“I’m so thankful to Lynda and Sara (Byard of Central Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission) for their last-minute work to get this grant applied for,” Daniels-Smoke said. “This will be great for the people of the community and the park.”
Feaga said one of the items on the wish list for the playground is a multi-functional slide system. Most parks have at least one at each municipality within the county.
In further action, the commission:
•Unanimously approved the proposed vacation of the right of way adjacent to the existing Bonner’s Point Road.
•Approved the Domestic Violence Grant and to amend the budget accordingly.
•Authorized the commission chairman to send a letter to each Elmore County municipality offering participation in the Elmore County Solid Waste Management Plan and to authorize the county administrator to advertise for a public hearing on SWMP update.
•Approved advertising RFP for demolition of Cook building and the former county jail.
•Approved a grant contract with the Alabama Department of Transportation (digital information cooperative agreement) and authorize the revenue commissioner to execute upon recommendation of the county attorney.
•Approved the credit card processing contract with Value Payment Systems.
•Approved a request from Mike Harper, former revenue commissioner, regarding removing monetary limitation on supernumerary status.
•Approved the authorization for Emerald Mountain Inc. to advertise for a public hearing on a 160-Special Retail-more than 30 day liquor license transfer from Emerald Mountain Golf Course.
•Approved the FY2013 State Emergency Management Performance Grant and cooperative agreement.
•Approved the additional FY2011 Homeland Security Grant funding.
The commission also unanimously denied a petition for reimbursement of excess funds from tax sale of real property by Cobblestone Learning Center, LLC.
In addition, the commission unanimously approved:
•Approval for the revenue commissioner to advertise and hire an assessment clerk.
•Approval of a copier lease contract renewal for the probate office.
•Approving a proposed plat for New Quarters Place Plat 1 and a proposed plat for The Ridge Phase VIII.
•Notification of intent to advertise for and hire two tag department employees.
•Approval for the sheriff’s department to surplus a 2004 Dodge Intrepid and authorize its sale.
