Grizzell indicted for 13-month-old’s murderPublished 8:58pm Sunday, October 6, 2013
An Elmore County grand jury has indicted a Prattville man and charged him with the murder of a 13-month-old boy.
Joey Alan Grizzell, 27, was charged with the murder after he was arrested and charged by the Elmore County Sheriff’s Department following a forensic pathologist’s report.
In the report, it indicated the little boy suffered from severe head trauma as well as signs of being violently shaken.
Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin said Grizzell confessed to dropping the child on the floor more than once.
“He not only shook the baby, he dropped it on more than one occasion,” Franklin told The Herald last month.
Grizzell was in his girlfriend’s home on Shelton Place in Deatsville Feb. 6 when he was asked to watch her 13-month-old son.
Grizzell later went to the home of the baby’s grandparents and said he “accidently dropped the baby on the kitchen floor.”
The child was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham where he later died from the injuries.
Franklin said investigators have a taped confession from Grizzell and has turned it over to the district attorney’s office.
Grizzell’s arraignment is set for Oct. 21.
An indictment is not a conviction of a crime.
