Bernard Nix, one of three men charged in the January 2011 shooting death of 6-year-old Kenyatta Kendrick, pleaded guilty to murder Thursday.
Circuit Judge Sibley Reynolds set Nix’s sentencing for January 2014. The 20-year-old Alexander City resident joins co-defendant Aaron McDowell, also of Alexander City, in pleading guilty. The third defendant, Stalandus Slaughter, faces a trial date set for Dec. 16.
Both men are expected to testify against Slaughter.
The three men are charged in a drive-by shooting on Nichols Avenue in Eclectic. Nix and McDowell are accused of spraying a home with bullets in the early morning of Jan. 4, 2011. Kenyatta Kendrick, a first grader at Eclectic Elementary, was shot and killed while sleeping in her bed.
Her uncle, Elmore County High graduate D.J. Kendrick, was shot in the ankle and required multiple surgeries to save his foot.
