HSVFR to host fishing tourney on Lake Jordan

Accidents on the water don’t happen extremely often, but when those cases do arise, the Holtville/Slapout Volunteer Fire and Rescue wants to be ready.
The station needs a new rescue boat, but can’t afford to purchase one, so that’s where HSVFD Lieutenant Jason Culpepper and member David Deese thought up a fitting fundraiser: a Bass Tournament Saturday.
“It’s fitting (having a fundraiser) on the water,” said Culpepper. “We actually have the boat picked out that we’d like to purchase, so we’re just trying to raise money to buy it. Hopefully, with the tournament, we can get us to where we can purchase it this year.”
Entry fee is $100 for a boat. Early registration will begin at 3:30 a.m. at Bonners Point Landing on Lake Jordan in Slapout and will run to 5 a.m. when participants will launch. First place is guaranteed $1,000 in prize money and second is guaranteed $500.
Lake Jordan is a big lake, Culpepper said, and it is crucial that the station have a boat that can safely travel the waters in rescue situations.
“It’s just one of the ways we can keep helping our community,” Culpepper said. “We’ve used a good amount of other boats, but the tournament will be raising money to help our response time on the water. That’s why we’re looking at another boat. The boat we have is outdated and wore out. You know, we might run one water rescue a year, so it’s hard to justify to spend money on it, so we’re raising money for it.
“We have purchased some new equipment recently , but we just need to make sure what we own equipment that is the best quality to serve our community.”
