Edgewood junior defensive back David Caton was selected by the Alabama Sports Writers Assocation as the defensive/special teams player of the week for his performance in the Wildcats’s 61-52 victory in the AISA Class AA state championship game.
With his team trailing by 44-34 in third quarter and Clarke Prepatory School driving, Caton scooped up a fumble and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown. He added a late-game interception and recorded six tackles in Edgewood’s record-setting 45th straight win and four consecutive state title.
The finalists for the defensive/special teams award are Saraland’s Tyler Sims and Marengo Academy’s Brant Lewis.
“It was pretty good for a guy that didn’t play high school football last year,” said EA head football coach Bobby Carr. “Throughout the year, David just got better week in and week out. That scoop-and-score was huge. We were down 10 and they were about to score, he picked it up and goes 85 yards the other way for the score. I’m happy for David. He’s a good kid, a great players, he’s the fastest guy on our team and we’re fortunate to have him back next year.”
