Holtville and Prattville Christian Academy wrestling teams participated in the 2013 Gene Taylor Classic at Weaver High School Friday and Saturday.
The Bulldogs placed fourth overall as a team, featured by two weight class winners in Hunter Scott (160-pound) and Zak Jones (182-pound).
Scott extended his match win streak to 50 after besting Tallassee’ B.J. Thomas in the 160-pound final. Jones also defeated a Tallassee Tiger, Drew Baker, to win his class.
Cody Gibson (120-pound) and Dusin Grier (195-pound) both finished third overall in their respective weight divisions. In the 106-pound class, Holtville’s Alex Sears brought home fourth overall.
Highlighting PCA Panthers best tournament in its program’s short, 14-month history was 120-pound wrestler Coleman Wright who placed fourth overall.
Although the team ended up 13th out 16 teams, the grapplers were only six-and-a-half points shy of garnering its first ever top 10 finish.
Stanhope Elmore and Wetumpka took the mat in the 2013 Swede Umbach Invitational wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday.
The Tribe captured two weight class trophies with Khaliq Jones and Marcus Graham securing the 152-pound and 160-pound titles respectively.
Jones pinned his first two foes and garnered a technical fall victory to advance to the championship bout. In the final, Jones pulled out the sudden death, 4-2 victory over number two seed Cadin McWhirter of Prattville.
Graham opened the tourney with bye, then rolled through his next two matches to reach the title dual. Matched up with Davis Perry, the bracket’s two seed from Hewitt-Trussville, Graham pinned his opponent at the 5:41 mark to win.
Cameron Spurlin (113-pound) and Jaret Gallops (138) both earned 2-2 recorded for the tourney for Wetumpka.
Harry Walker led the way for the Mustangs, capturing third overall in the 220-pound bracket. After dropping his opening dual against Benjamin Russell’s Justavious Robinson by a 3-10 decision, Walker rattled off four straight victories to bring home third place. In the consolation medal dual, he defeated Hewitt-Trussville’s Braedon Keith 9-6 in a decision.
Ty Naquin (106-pound), Travis Gartman (132-pound) and Malik Hibley (182-pound) all amassed a 2-2 record for the tourney. Terence Burke (120-pound) also picked up a win for the Mustangs.
