Six players from The Wetumpka Herald’s coverage area were announced to the 2013 first-team All-State football team Sunday, selected by the Alabama Sports Writers Association earlier this month.
Wetumpka senior Charlie Crenshaw and Christian Williams made the cut on offense in Class 6A. Behind Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic player and Georgia Southern commit Williams, who graded out at 81 percent on the season, Crenshaw amassed 1,419 rushing yards, 2,004 all-purpose yards and 25 total touchdowns.
Defensive tackle Will Hogan was the lone representative from the 2-8 Holtville Bulldogs, chosen for the Class 4A first-team defense. The junior recorded 111 total tackles, 14 sacks, 42 tackles-for-loss and tw forced fumbles. Tallassee junior upback Brandon Baynes garnered a first-team nod as an offensive athlete. Sharing the backfield with two other 1,000-yard rushers (Herman McKenzie and D.J. Rivers), Baynes racked up 1,128 yards and 14 scores on 127 carries.
Edgewood had two players selected to the Alabama Independetn School Association first-team. Running back
Josh Crawford came in as an offensive athlete. This season, the junior accummulated 1,675 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns. Kicker Alex Dettmar locked up the specialist slot, hitting 69-of-76 PATs and four field goals in 2013.
Six more local players earned All-State honorable mention, with four from the Edgewood Wildcats.
Senior quarterback Taylor Hawthorne, senior tight end Heath Young, sophomore Daniel Green and freshman Jackson Tate all received honorable mentions for the AISA offense.
In Class 4A, Tallassee tailback McKenzie and Elmore County wide receiver Javon Moore came in as honorable mentions.
