Barrett, Rawls leads Wetumpka Middle in wrestling tournamentPublished 12:32pm Thursday, January 9, 2014
Two Wetumpka Middle School wrestlers won their weight class brackets, and another wrestled in the finals, at the James Clemens Duals in Huntsville, Ala. Friday and Saturday.
Trent Barrett (135-pound) and John Ellis Rawls both brought home a gold medal, while Devon McGinty (112-pound) secured a runner-up finish.
Barrett pinned his first two opponents of the tournament in Austin Mizell of Sparkman and Jordan Adams of Grissom. In the 135-pound bracket final, the Indian defeated Arab’s Brandon Howard by a 14-8 decision to earn first place.
The road to the title was similar for Rawls as he matted his first two foes. In the first round, he bested Athen’s Taylor Gray and in the second round, he counted out Cameron Cross of Muscle Shoals. Rawls pulled out the one-point decision in the championship bout over Arab’s Michael Weaver, a 7-6 victory.
In the 112-pound division, McGinty started fast, pinning C.J. O’Neal of Hartselle. His second match was high scoring tie-up, and McGinty pulled out the 15-12 decision against Arab’s Anthony Camp. But in the title bout, Camp’s teammate Clay Jones got the better of the Indian, garnering first place with a pin.
