Elmore County Air Evac base closedPublished 1:33pm Tuesday, January 21, 2014
Air Evac Lifeteam President Seth Myers informed all employees Tuesday morning at the Elmore County air ambulance base at the Wetumpka Municipal Airport that the base was closing immediately.
Myers cited low utilization of the service and low reimbursement rates as the factors leading to the immediate closure of the base which has been in service since April 2006.
“We’ve been taking a loss with this base for many years,” Myers said in a statement released Tuesday by Air Evac Lifeteam. “…While we regret to close any base we have in operation, if we are not able to cover the costs to operate the base, we must utilize our resources in other areas that have greater needs.”
Myers met with crew members who have been working at the Elmore County base and have all been offered the opportunity to work in other positions in the company or accept a severance package.
Air Evac Lifeteam has two other bases — Demopolis and LaGrange, Ga. —within an 80-mile radius of Elmore County.
Air Evac Lifeteam members living in Autauga, Bullock, Chilton, Crenshaw, Elmore, Montgomery, Pike and Tallapoosa counties will receive a letter this week to provide options for their membership, including a option for a prorated refund.
