Posting a perfect 3-0 record, the Edgewood junior varsity boys basketball team won the Alabama Independent School Association JV State Championship tournament Saturday at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Columbiana, Ala.
Jon Johnson earned Most Valuable Player honors, averaging 11.6 points per game to lead EA’s title run, while teammate Sawyer Pyle made the All-Tournament team.
The Wildcats (10-1), the fourth seed, mowed down Abbeville Christian in its opening contest 45-12. Johnson recorded 13 points, while Tripp Carr and Khalid Young added six each.
In the second round, Edgewood met top-seeded Lakeside. The Wildcats trailed by as many as eight in the second half, but Pyle turned in 15 second half points–11 in the fourth quarter–as EA pulled out the 41-39 victory.
After its come-from-behind triumph in the semifinals, the championship game against Marengo Academy proved smoother for the ‘Cats as they won 50-30. Caleb Sullivan led the charge with 13 points, Johnson tallied 12 and Maurice Young scored eight.
“Those kids love to compete, that’s the bottom line,” coach Clint Welch said. “They get after it, they hustle. They’re coachable, anything ask them to do, they do it. They’re a fun group to coach. They play with heart and passion, they’re fun to watch. They wanted to win.
“They’re very unselfish. I mean, every game somebody else contributes. We had so many players that had a good tournament. They play the game as a team. I’m happy for them because they wanted it real bad.”
