Prison brawl sends 8 to hospital

Published 4:32pm Monday, March 3, 2014

Three inmates from the Elmore Correctional Facility were admitted to Jackson Hospital Sunday night after a large fight broke out in one of the dorms.

Brian Corbett, spokesman for the Alabama Department of Corrections, said eight inmates were transported to the hospital after the fight was brought under control.

Three inmates were admitted to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries were unknown as of 4:30 p.m. Monday, according to Corbett.

“Right now we don’t know how many were in the fight,” he said.

As to what may have started the ruckus, Corbett said statements are still being taken from corrections officers.

“Our officers responded in number and managed to contain the situation in C Dorm in a matter of minutes,” Corbett added.

No officers were injured.

As to the frequency of fights of this magnitude, Corbett said it has been a “rare” occurence in the 12 years he’s worked with ADOC.

The Elmore Correctional Facility is now under lockdown until further notice, Corbett said.
