Relay deadlines approaching

While Wetumpka’s Relay for Life is still more than a month away, many activities are in full swing and deadlines for some opportunities are rapidly approaching.

One such deadline involves purchasing torches to be illuminated during Relay for Life April 26.

The torches are a relatively recent addition to Relay’s traditional luminary display.

Torches are offered for a $50 minimum donation which includes a personalized plate available to donors after the end of Relay. Luminaries can be purchased for a $5 minimum contribution each.

The glowing lights are a  special part of each year’s Relay for Life in Wetumpka.

The luminary ceremony is integral to the event and luminaries mark off the walking path at Relay. During the evening the candles are lit in honor or memory of cancer patients.

Another approaching deadline is April 14 – the last day businesses or organizations can commit to a Relay sponsorship.

“There will be almost 700 T-shirts given out for Relay and sponsors will be represented on the backs of the shirts,” said Angie Carter, sponsorship chair.

Those interested in supporting the Relay effort as a sponsor should call Carter at 334-850-1955.

“The American Cancer Society has set our community goal for $100,000,” she said. “We will all need to work together to achieve it. The funds we raise are used to educate, provide services and fund research for all types of cancer.”

Carter said that 21 teams have registered to date to participate in the Wetumpka Relay for Life which will be held April 26 from noon to midnight at Hohenberg Field, Wetumpka High’s football stadium.

Teams representing various businesses, churchs, school groups and others will set up camps around the field and spend time walking or running on the Relay track.

Games, music, food and other activities will also be part of the day’s events.

To sponsor luminaries or torches at the Wetumpka Relay, complete and return the appropriate form with payment.
