Edgewood’s Lucky picks up 1st offer, won’t be last

Retired U.S. Army 82nd Airborne veteran Buford Haynes, 82, died Monday, March 24, 2014, following a brief illness due to an automobile accident.

The Titus resident who was a  game warden  for 30 years with the Alabama Department of Conservation, was born July 5, 1931, in Napoleon.

He was an admirer and protector of God’s little creatures, particularly “his” hummingbirds and the deer population. He was devoted to his career and joyfully served the citizens of Elmore County with pride and dignity.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. March 26 at Gassett Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. March 27 at the Gassett Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gerald Wood and Brother Ralph Calloway officiating. Interment will follow at Lebanon Cemetery in Titus with Gassett Funeral Home directing.

Mr. Haynes is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 61½ years, Peggy F. Haynes; son, David (Dale Oswalt) Haynes; granddaughter, Jessica Haynes (Walter) Quinn; grandson, Joshua Haynes; great grandsons, David Quinn, Dillan Quinn, and Daniel Quinn; daughter-in-law, Jeanetta Calloway Haynes; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Warner and Annie Haynes and several brothers and sisters.

Pallbearers will be members of the Alabama Department of Conservation Honor Guard.

Honorary pallbearers will be his longtime colleagues and friends of the Alabama Department of Conservation, Herschel Johnston, Hershel Patterson, and Bryant Jackson; and special friends, Andy and Gail Horsley, Bonita Little, Marie Thornell, and Rhonda Sanders, and Wayne Emfinger.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to Faith Baptist Church.
