TROY REGIONALS: Elmore County wins 2; eyes berth at statePublished 6:36pm Friday, May 9, 2014
The Elmore County Lady Panthers held on to win both of its opening AHSAA Class 4A regional games, by the count of 4-2, against Calera and Oak Grove Friday at the Troy Sportsplex.
Senior pitcher Chelsea Fomby recorded two wins for Elmore County (31-4) in the circle, allowing five hits in each game and struck out five combined hitters.
In the second round winner’s bracket contest versus Oak Grove, ECHS took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Sophomore Elissa Brown took home on a Lady Tigers fielder’s choice.
The Lady Panthers added two insurance runs in the fifth off bunts, while still leading 1-0. Senior Brooke Nettles scored off a throwing error from third baseman Erin Benson fielding senior Haley Britt’s bunt. Two batters later, Britt took home on senior Tori Jackson’s sacrifice bunt to extend ECHS’s lead to 3-0.
“They were big,” ECHS coach Wilbur Terrell said. “The purpose of insurance runs is to let you relax a little bit. You’ve played that really intense ballgame. I felt like we could’ve held them because we’ve had one run games before and we did OK.”
After Oak Grove cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth, the Panthers pushed another run across the plate when Britt smacked an RBI hit, scoring senior Olivia Royal.
Elmore County will meet West Blocton for a state tournament berth at 8 a.m. Saturday.
