Walter Clinton Holdbrooks Jr.

Mr. Walter Clinton Holdbrooks Jr., (Sonny) passed away at Jackson Hospital on Monday, May 12, 2014.  He was born Sept. 24, 1932, and was a resident at the Gardens of Wetumpka.

He was the son of the late Walter Clinton Holdbrooks Sr., and Valera Crosby Holdbrooks.

Survivors include his sisters, Nancy Holdbrooks and Janice Holdbrooks Cash (Lee); nephews, Clay Holdbrooks Cash and Clinton Lee Cash; and niece, Nancy Carol Turner; one great nephew and four great nieces.

He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Wetumpka.

Sonny was a dedicated teacher of Spanish and taught at the University of Alabama for 32 years. He was a Fulbright Scholar and Professor Emeritus at the university and had many other distinguished honors.

He taught Spanish at Wetumpka High School, his alma mater, for one year.

Sonny returned to Wetumpka upon his retirement and was very active in Retired Teachers, serving as an officer on the local, county and state levels.

Pallbearers are some of his former WHS students. They are Tommy Head, Tommy Stowe, Joe McKinnis, Edgar Weldon, Warren Jones and Ned Cash.

The family has requested donations be made to the Elmore County Community Foundation for the Tommy C. Turner Scholarship Fund, 35 S. Court St., Montgomery, AL 36104, or the First United Methodist Church Depot Fund, 306 W. Tuskeena St., Wetumpka, AL 36092.

Visitation will be May 13 6-8 p.m.  at Wetumpka Memorial Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. May 14 in the Wetumpka Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Walter Albritton officiating and the Rev. Kevin Kelly assisting with Wetumpka Memorial Funeral Home directing.
