Alleged thief in crash after burglaryPublished 9:59am Monday, June 9, 2014
An alleged thief may have learned a hard lesson Thursday morning.
After stealing something from a home, it’s probably not a good idea to be involved in an automobile accident.
Elmore County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call reporting a vehicle accident on the 5000 block of Kowaliga Road in the Kowaliga community around 8:30 a.m.
When deputies and Alabama State Troopers arrived they found the driver of a Pontiac Grand Prix in possession of a stove and other items which were just reported stolen from a residence on the 6000 block of Weldon Road, according to Sheriff Bill Franklin.
“As it turns out this guy took this stuff from the house and had just left,” Franklin said.
Inside the Grand Prix deputies found a stove, a construction radio, tile and other items.
Deputies immediately placed Justin Bettis, 25, of Lanett under arrest and charged him with third-degree burglary, second-degree theft of property and possession of burglar’s tools.
When Bettis was booked into the jail, deputies found a surprise on Bettis’ person, Franklin said.
“They found 257 Xanax pills around his scrotum area,” Franklin said.
Bettis was then charged with possession of a controlled substance.
