A Prattville man was sentenced to 15 years and a day after pleading guilty to manslaughter of a 3-year-old girl in 2011.

David Michael Carr, 23, said nothing before or after Circuit Court Judge Sibley Reynolds upheld the state’s plea agreement.

Carr was originally charged with murder of Sarah Lowery, who was the child of his former girlfriend, after an autopsy showed Lowery died from blunt force trauma to the head.

“He did admit to committing a reckless act and he will serve 15 years and a day in jail for it,” said C.J. Robinson, deputy chief district attorney for the 19th judicial circuit. “He will be eligible for parole after he’s served 80 percent of his sentence, but we’ll be back to see he serves the entire sentence.”

Millbrook police had responded to a call of a child having a seizure on the 800 block of Deatsville Highway in Millbrook on April 22, 2011.

When paramedics arrived on the scene they could visibly tell the child had suffered a head wound.

Court documents showed that Carr later told the girl’s grandparents he had accidently dropped the child.

The autopsy showed not only had the girl suffered head trauma but had been beaten about the waist and legs.

Lowery died two days following the incident at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.

“This was a 3-year-old child that deserved not to die, so that’s why we are asking for the full agreed upon sentence,” assistant district attorney Kristy Peoples said during the sentencing hearing.
