The Wetumpka High School varsity boys basketball team has been picking up wins lately, but head coach Chet Stewart isn’t quite satisfied with where his team is.

“We just haven’t been playing that great,” he said. “We play well at times, but we’re in 6A now, and we have to start stepping it up.”

The Indians (15-8) won two of their last three games, which is good for a team “not playing as well as they can,” Stewart said.

“I’m afraid my guys have gotten satisfied, and they should be anything but that right now, especially with Lee coming up in the first round of the playoffs,” he said.

Last Friday, WHS hosted Jeff Davis, losing 91-69.

Obrien Murphy led Wetumpka with 20 points.

Joining Murphy in double digits were Tevin Washington with 18 and Kendall Lacey with 11. Jay Thomas chipped in five to round out the Indians’ top scorers.

Last Tuesday, WHS traveled to Autaugaville, winning that contest 51-47.

“We’ve been winning by the skin of our teeth lately,” Stewart said. “It was a sloppy game by both teams, but we managed to win.”

Murphy led Wetumpka once again, this time with 15 points. Washington and Thomas each enjoyed 10-point nights, and Kejuan Riley added nine more.

Finally, the Indians hosted Prattville Friday night, winning 55-49.

“We looked a little better against Prattville; we got a good win there,” Stewart said. “We need that good play to carry over for us.”

Murphy led WHS once more with 12 points. Riley and Felton Smith each had 11 points, and the Indians got more help from Thomas and Lacey, who had nine and eight points, respectively.

“Kendall might not play tonight because he hurt his elbow in the Prattville game,” Stewart said of Wetumpka’s game against Autaugaville last night. “We have no size beyond him, so we need him to get healthy.”

Wetumpka will face Prattville at Faulkner University Friday night. The Indians will then prepare to take on Lee in the first round of the Area 6 playoffs at 7 p.m., Feb. 10 at Jeff Davis High School.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do; Lee has already beaten us twice this year,” Stewart said. “We’ve got to pick up our play.”
