With the Class 6A, Area 6 playoffs coming up this weekend, the Wetumpka Indians ended their regular season by winning four of their last five games.

“We seemed pretty confident, and we’ve improved since the last time we played Lee,” said boys head coach Chet Stewart.

The Robert E. Lee Generals will be the Indians first-round opponent at Jeff Davis High School Friday night.

“They beat us both times we played them this year, but we’ve improved since then,” Stewart said. “The only question is, ‘Have they improved, too?’ We haven’t played them in two months, but I’d say they have, because they’ve won 20 games this season.”

Before Wetumpka (17-8) could begin to prepare for the Generals, it had Autaugaville and Prattville to deal with. The Indians defeated Autauguaville 62-59 last week.

Obrien Murphy, whose play has picked up in recent weeks, led the Indians with 17 points. Felton Smith and Kejuan Riley followed with 15 points each.

“(Murphy) has been playing real well for us the past couple of weeks,” Stewart said. “Our guards are playing well, and that helps you a lot.”

Wetumpka followed that performance with a season-finale win over Prattville at Faulkner University Friday night, 77-67.

Murphy led the Indians again with 25 points. Smith followed with 21, and Riley had 14.

“(Riley) has seemed to get more confidence over the season,” Stewart said, “and you can always count on (Smith) to play solid for you.”

Now the Indians can focus on the area tournament n and more importantly n avenging those two regular-season losses to Lee.

“They’re a good team; we’ll have to play at our best and shoot well to beat them,” Stewart said. “It should be a good game.”

The Indians seem to have the deck stacked against them in an area with Lee, Jeff Davis and Sidney Lanier.

“It won’t be easy at all, but you can’t ever tell. That’s why we play the games,” Stewart said.
