The second annual Lord’s Day Easter Parade wound around the perimeter of Wetumpka’s Gold Star Park Saturday led by Judas Jackson carrying a cross as he portrayed Jesus.
Jackson a 2005 Wetumpka High grad, attends Alabama State University, and is a motivational speaker at numerous youth rallies in the Elmore County area.
“He was chosen because he is an outstanding young man in this community and in his church,” said Dr. Betty George of Rhama Word Ministries. “He is a musician at his church, on the praise team, leads the drama club and is a praise dancer.
“His mother says that God told her to name him Judas because that would give the name a new meaning, and he is living it out,” she continued. “He works with young people in the community through tutoring and sports, and he helps prepare and deliver food to elderly people in the community.”
Jackson also played the role of Jesus in last year’s program.
“It’s an honor,” Jackson said.
Several Elmore County churches joined forces to host the event.
A program followed the procession. Evangelist Sarah Nell Marshall received the Charlena Kay Miller Warriors Award for 51 years of service. Apostle Annette Hughley was presented the Charlena Kay Miller Pastor of the Year Award. Both awards were presented by Elmore County Probate Judge Jimmy Stubbs.
Certificates were presented to William Miller and family, the husband and children of the late Pastor C.K. Miller of Wall Street AME Zion Church in Tallassee, and to Omega George and others.
Keynote speaker was Dr. James Turner, pastor of the Victory through Faith Worship Center in Montgomery. Praise dancers from Jehovah Nissi Church and True Word of Life Church also performed.
"The whole purpose of this event was to honor Jesus,” George said.
