After taking visits to about a dozen colleges, Wetumpka High’s Brooke Monson has decided where she will continue her softball career. The Lady Indians outfielder will join the Hendrix College team in Conway, Ark. this fall.

Monson celebrated her commitment to Hendrix with family, friends and her WHS teammates.

“I liked the campus a lot. It was very homey,” she said. “But I liked the people the most.

“The coach was awesome, and I met some of the layers and they told me really good things,” Brooke added. “Everybody there seems to be really interested in the kids.”

While the distance from home means that Brooke’s mom, Joy Monson, will have limited opportunities to watch her daughter play she is happy with Brooke’s choice.

“Hendrix just had everything she wanted, academically and athletically” said Joy. “And it was almost like being in Wetumpka. There is a small town feeling.

“We liked the campus, the coaches and the community,” she continued. “I’m excited for her and very proud.”

Wetumpka head softball coach Randy Stough was glad to see the last of his five senior players assured of a collegiate career in the game.

“Brooke has played left field for us for three years, and she’s been in our program for some time,” he said. “She’s always been a joy to coach and keeps things interesting.

“Brooke’s one of our power hitters and has the potential to knock the ball over the fence at any time,” Stough added. “She’s steadily improved at the plate and on defense every year, ad she’s somebody we can depend on. Brooke’s the kind of kid you like to coach.”

He noted that Brooke also shines in the classroom. She has received an academic scholarship to Hendrix.

“She’s done a lot of service projects, too. Brooke’s just a well-rounded individual,” said Stough. “We’re all proud of her, and I think she’ll do well.”
