Labor Day fun and food abound

Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end of summer in the U.S. The three-day holiday traditionally boasts barbecue sales and other offerings for those who want to escape the chore of cooking or are simply looking for a relaxing outing.

There will be several opportunities locally to purchase fresh-cooked barbecue, camp stew and Boston butts. In addition, the holiday weekend will feature several other activities to appeal to a variety of tastes.

Following are recaps of various events in the area.

Friday

• The Holtville Hill School wrestling team will sell slabs of ribs for $18. Ribs may be picked up hot Friday or cold Saturday. Tickets may be purchased from team members or Mrs. Lewis at Holtville Middle School. Pickup will be at the R&K Kountry Mart in Deatsville.

Saturday

• The Wetumpka Lions Club will host its annual barbecue fund-raiser at Gold Star Park from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Cost is $7 per plate, which contains barbecue, sauce, slaw, baked beans, bread and dessert. Tickets are available from any Lions Club member.

• Hill City Lodge No. 21 of Wetumpka will hold its yearly barbecue sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the lodge, located at 210 Company St. For information, call Lewis E. Washington Sr. at 567-9400.

• The yearly Red Hill Labor Day barbecue will offer Boston butts, barbecue and camp stew for sale. The barbecue will be held at the Red Hill School on Highway 229 beginning at 9 a.m. All proceeds benefit the Red Hill Community Club.

• Emerald Mountain Volunteer Fire Department will sell Boston butts for $25 and plates for $5. Plates include barbecue pork, potato salad and baked beans. Cakes made by the Emerald Mountain Garden Club will be available for $20 for whole cakes and $1 for slices for $1. The sale will be at the Emerald Mountain fire station from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call 567-6007 or 514-7550 for details.


• The Lightwood Volunteer Fire Department annual barbecue sale will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the fire station, located at 6250 Lightwood Rd. (County Road 23, approximately six miles north of Slapout). Barbecue plates (chicken or chopped pork) will be available for $8 and Boston butts for $25. Each plate will contain chicken or pork, coleslaw, baked beans, bread and a piece of cake. All proceeds benefit the Lightwood VFD. For info, call Daphne Wood at 569-2264 or 569-2093.

• Customers can pick up Boston butts preordered from Wetumpka American Legion Post No. 7. Butts must be picked up before 2 p.m. at Fort John M. Boddie National Guard Armory.

• The Coosa River Whitewater Festival, hosted by the Coosa River Paddling Club, will return to Wetumpka. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. at the Coosa Outdoor Center, located at 107 River Rd. Participants can float down the Coosa River and join the party (with live music) afterward. Attendees are encouraged to pack a picnic and bring a cooler. Cost is $30 (includes shuttle, T-shirt, party and camping) or $5 shuttle, $15 T-shirt, $10 party, $5 camping. For info, call 272-0952. The event is hosted by the Coosa River Paddling Club to promote conservation and awareness of the Coosa River.

• The American Legion Wetumpka Post No. 7 Auxiliary is coordinating a yard sale at Fort John M. Boddie National Guard Armory. Anyone who would like to participate, or donate to the fund-raiser for this nonprofit organization should call Shiela Fulmer at 202-1017.

• September’s Santuck flea market will begin at first light on the grounds surrounding Santuck Baptist Church, located on Old Central Plank Road.

• The Coosada Volunteer Fire Department will host a Coosada Heritage Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Coosada Park on Pecan Grove Drive off Coosada Parkway. The festival will feature arts and crafts, a children’s mini-carnival, entertainment, live music, food and baked goods, historical displays, a car show, a motorcycle show, demonstrations, a raffle silent auction and a talent show. Sunday

• The final event in the Russell Lands 2007 concert series will feature Sister Hazel as the headliner, along with The Robin Hill Band. The show will begin at 7 p.m. at the Lake Martin Amphitheater. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased for $20 through Ticketmaster and its outlets. Children 12 and under will be admitted free. Monday

• The Millbrook Mens Club will holds its annual Labor Day barbecue at the barbecue hut adjacent to the Millbrook Softball Complex and Civic Center beginning at 6 a.m. and continuing until sold out. Pork and chicken plates, sandwiches and camp stew will be available. All proceeds are re-invested in the community.
