Former Wetumpka High School baseball player Trey Martin is getting set to step back onto the collegiate diamond. Martin, who served as the starting centerfielder for the Jefferson State Pioneers in Birmingham, has inked a National Letter of Intent to play Division I baseball at Southeastern Louisiana University and is scheduled to report in August.
According to Lions’ assistant coach Justin Hill, Martin will more than likely play for centerfield for Hammond, La., based university this spring.
“We are proud of Trey not only for his baseball achievements, but for his academic achievements as well,” said Martin’s parents Jimmy and Cheri Martin. “God has blessed Trey with a great work ethic and we know this will help him reach his goals.”
While playing on the junior college level at Jefferson State, Martin served as the Pioneers starting centerfielder and batted .338 with 17 stolen bases. He also had 138 putouts and 14 RBIs.
Southeastern Louisiana University is a member of the Southland Conference which is comprised of colleges and universities throughout Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana.
Currently the Lions are 28-25 (14-15) and will more than likely enter the Southland Conference baseball tournament as a No. 7 seed and face No. 2 seeded Lamar College in the tourney opener today.
