Locals named to Diamond Dozen list

Baseball season in Elmore County ended with a bang. Wetumpka High School, Stanhope Elmore High School, Edgewood Academy and Elmore County High School each advanced out of the regular season and into the playoffs

For some of the teams the road to the playoffs was longer than the actually postseason. For the second year in a row, Wetumpka High School claimed the area crown by defeating Robert E. Lee High School in the final area game of the season.

Stanhope Elmore High School advanced to the postseason as runner-up to area champion Prattville High School. Elmore County finished second in the area behind St James after having to defeat Brewbaker Tech in the final area game of the year. Holtville fell short of advancing by finishing third behind Trinity Presbyterian and Alabama Christian Academy.

Edgewood Academy advanced to the playoffs as an AISA area runner-up.

Wetumpka defeated Stanhope in the first round of the playoffs to advance to the second round of the playoffs for the second straight year in 6A.

Elmore County defeated Opp to advance to round two in the 4A bracket.

Macon-East, who fell in the Class AAA championship game, eliminated Edgewood Academy in the AISA’s Elite 8 portion of the tournament.

Baseball season came to a close in Elmore County during the second round of the AHSAA playoffs. McGill Toolen dispatched the Indians in two games.

Elmore County stood toe-to-toe with 2007 champion Childerburg before coming up one-run short in the third game of the best-of-three series.

Regardless of the outcome on the field, each team had players that stood out and made a significant impact.


Those players are highlighted here in the first edition of the Diamond Dozen.

2. Tyler Drennan --- (Junior, Edgewood Academy) .425 batting average, 2 HR 42 RBI, 11 2B, 45 1B, 24 runs scored, .642 slugging percentage, Named an AISA Baseball All-Star

3. Kendall Lacey --- (Senior, Wetumpka High School) .402 batting average, 10 HR, 35 RBI, 8 2B, 43 1B, 32 runs scored, .757 slugging percentage, signed football scholarship with Samford University

4. Josh Law (Senior, Holtville High School), .402 batting average, 9 HR, 28 RBI, 1 3B, 6 2B, 37 1B, 31 runs scored; as a pitcher n 3.73 ERA, 1-1, 15 innings pitched, 24 strikeouts

5. Brett Roney (Senior, Wetumpka High School).348 batting average, 2HR, 37 RBI, 1 3B, 11 2B, 39 1B, 32 runs scored; as a pitcher n 4.38 ERA, 4-2, 44.2 innings pitched with 55 strikeouts, .714 winning percentage, signed a baseball scholarship with the University of Montevallo

6. Nathan Knight (Junior, Wetumpka High School), .400 batting average, 5 HR, 33 RBI, 3 3B, 12 2B, 50 1B, 54 runs scored, .483 on base percentage, .664 slugging percentage

7. Courtney Lewis (Senior, Wetumpka High School).330 batting average, 21-21 stolen bases,1 HR, 20 RBI 1 3B, 3 2B, 34 1B, 29 runs scored, .409 on base percentage, signed a baseball scholarship with Lawson State Community College

8. Matt Parker (Senior, Elmore County High School), .394 batting average, 2HR, 26 RBI, 37 1B, 15 stolen bases

9. Avery Warhurst (Junior, Stanhope Elmore High School) .402 batting average, 1HR, 19 RBI, 2 3B, 5 2B, 33 1B, 24 runs scored

10. Troy Lanier (Senior, Elmore County High School), .316 batting average, 1 HR, 20 RBI, 33 1B; as a pitcher n 1.29 ERA, 26 strikeouts

11. Casey Antley (Sophomore, Holtville High School), .481 batting average in 54 plate appearances, 1 HR, 12RBI, 5 2B, 26 1B, 27 runs scored
