After playing two preliminary games, Bretty Roney will join Holtville’s Josh Law and be apart of the Central Regional All-Stars taking part in the final games of the Lion’s Club state championship which is to be played this weekend at Samford University.
The Central Regional team will face the South Regional team Friday night at 7 p.m. The North Regional squad will challenge the team from the Birmingham Metro Region Friday night at 4 p.m., and the state championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.
In last weekend’s match-up against the West Region team, Roney pitched two innings and played in the field.
“The first inning was three up and three down,” said Roney. “The second inning I didn’t do so well.”
Roney, who has already committed to play baseball for the University of Montevallo, will join players from Opelika High School and Catholic(Montgomery) High School in forming the Central Region All-Stars.
“There wasn’t a lot of pressure during the regular season,” said Roney. “Especially since I’ve already signed with a college. There was pressure to play for Coach (Ray Mullino) and to win but that was the only pressure.”
The Lion’s Club Tournament is a constant re-evaluating talent as teams dwindle down to the top 16 baseball players from each region.
“It eliminates the players that shouldn’t be there,” said Roney. “When we get to the third round, it gives us a better chance of competing and winning.”
The format also serves as a way to showcase the athletes that have already committed to play collegiate baseball and those still searching for an offer.
“There’s a little difference between the two,” said Roney. “Some of the guys who have already signed are a little more mature and know the game a little better than those that haven’t and they are more laid back. They don’t have the sense of urgency that others do.”
