Things are changing at Holtville High School.

Following a unanimous vote during the June 16 meeting of the Elmore County Board of Education Maudell Pou has been selected to replace longtime coach Gerry Miller at the helm of the Lady Bulldog basketball program.

“I’m overjoyed,” said Pou.

Pou, who is originally from Virginia, is currently working on her master’s degree in physical education at Alabama State University.

“This is my first full-time coaching position, but I’ve been working with girls basketball teams at the YMCA,” said Pou.

She hopes that her excitement will translate to success on the court.

“I want them to have a productive and fun time when they are out there competing or practicing,” said Pou. “I want them to be grounded in the fundamentals of the game. I hope that they have a positive experience.”

Pou, also slated to teach science at the high school level, thinks that Holtville’s community will aide in the team’s success.

“I like the environments of small towns,” said Pou, “I grew up in a small town and I like being rooted in a place where I can get to know people. That will also make this team stronger, the fact that they are grounded and know each other. Teams that are grounded in who they are do better and are successful.”

Overall, Pou is excited about the opportunity before her this year.

“I have a passion for the game of basketball and for science,” said Pou. “I just want to jump in have good time and win as many games as we can.”

Miller, who taught upper-level math at Holtville, resigned earlier in the summer.

The Lady Bulldogs compete in Class 4A and, as of the latest regional alignments, will challenge Elmore County, Catholic (Montgomery) and Booker T. Washington Magnet for one of two slots in the postseason.
