Local theater lovers will have the chance to enjoy a little lagniappe when the Wetumpka Depot Players stage a special, limited run production less than two weeks from now. (LagÂ-niappe is a south Louisiana term that often refers to an extra or unexpected gift or benefit).

A 5-member cast will present “Stories My Grandmother Told Me,” written by Ted Swindley, the author of “Always Patsy Cline.”

Depot Executive Director Kristy Meanor will direct the play, which details the relationship between a family matriarch, a right-wing Auntie Mame, and her grandson.

“Tom Salter’s character (John Mark) has written a book about his grandmother’s stories,” explained Meanor. “The show celebrates the influence and impact she had on his life.

“I think this play is something a lot of us can identify with -- hearing your elders tell stories around the table or while sitting on the porch,” she said. “And sometimes those stories grew in the telling.

“It’s sort of reminiscent of Tennessee Williams, Eudora Welty and all those other Southern writers.” continued Meanor.

Meanor said the 4-day run will give audiences a show to enjoy between major productions.

“We decided to do it to kind of sneak into the fall season since we had a larger gap than usual between shows,” she said. “Plus, I read this about two years ago and thought it would be something our audiences would really like.”

And, she added, the performances will kick off Grandparents Month in September.

Show dates are Sept. 4-6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 per person. For reservations, contact 868-1440 or kmeanor@wetumpkadepot. com.
