Elmore County Commission Chairman Joe Faulk was elected president of the Association of County Commissions of Alabama. The ceremonial gavel was passed to Faulk at the group’s annual convention.
Faulk has served on the association’s board of directors and was a previous vice president.
"I'm very excited to work with our new board of directors and all of our members across the state in the coming year," Faulk said. "One of my goals this year is to help the Association make Alabama's roads safer. We will work hard, all of our members together, to save lives on our county roads."
Faulk discussed the benefits of membership in the ACCA at Monday night’s commission meeting. The association, he said, gives commissioners and their staffs a chance to compare notes on issues that affect county commissions statewide.
In discussing his personal honor, Faulk deflected much of the praise to his staff, including county administrator Jeanette Medders, County Engineer Richie Beyer and Public Information Officer Lynda Feaga.
“When you look at the staffers from other counties, I believe there is no comparison,” Faulk said. “Our staff is head and shoulders above what any other county staff does.”
Commissioner Don Whorton, himself a former chairman, said he was “glad to have a hometown young man to represent us on this state body.”
Commissioner Mickey Shaw said Elmore County should be “really proud of Faulk.”
“But I won’t congratulate him, “Shaw added. “I want to congratulate Elmore County on the excellent representation Joe provides for the county.”
Faulk was inducted president by outgoing president Jerold Dean, who is a commissioner in Conecuh County.
"We have nothing to worry about in the next year. I know that Joe will lead this Association with pride and a dedication to improving county government," Dean said following Faulk’s election. "With his experience on the board and knowledge of county issues, Joe will continue to be a valuable asset to the people of Alabama."
Other officers joining Faulk on the Association's board include Escambia County Commissioner Larry White as first vice president, and Clay County Commissioner Ricky Burney as second vice president.
Faulk has been chairman of the Elmore County Commission since 2004, and was first elected to the commission in 2000. He previously served as a city councilman in Millbrook.
ACCA promotes improved county government services in Alabama, offers educational programs for county officials and their staff members, administers insurance programs for county governments and employees, offers legal advice and represents the interest of county government before state and federal organizations and agencies.
