For the third straight year, members of Wetumpka’s Friends of the Community group will host a health and wellness fair as a service to the community. According to organizers, response to the first two events was overwhelmingly positive.

“People were very pleased to be able to get the screenings we had available,” said Janette Chalker, a member of the organization. “Hopefully this year’s fair will be even more successful than the first two.”

Friends of the Community was formed several years ago, and one of the organization’s aims has been to provide community services “ a role the health fair fills well.

Attendees at the 2008 fair will have an opportunity to have health checks done and to receive information on various health-related topics.

“Last year the most popular booths were the screenings,” said Chalker. “And people also liked the little goodies they were able to pick up.”

A number of physicians and other health care providers will be on hand during the event; and a blood drive will be held in conjunction with the fair.

Screenings will include blood pressure check; diabetes, glucose and cholesterol screening; sickle cell screening; HIV screening and dental screening.

Among the other offerings will be information about cancer, nutrition, cystic fibrosis, health insurance, mental health, head injuries, Medicare and Medicaid and more. Door prizes will be given away each hour.

On site physicians will include Dr. Jim Anderson, Dr. Don Bell, Dr. Spender Coleman, Dr. Mark Hayden, Dr. Ric Montiel, Dr. Tom Pershing, Dr. John Williams and Dr. Lisa Williams.

The health and wellness fair will be held Sept. 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wetumpka High School. There will be no admission fee.

“We appreciate every one of our participating sponsors,” said Emmett Johnson, another Friends of the Community member. “We plan to continue this as an annual event for our group.”
