After opening Thursday’s best-of-five series with Montgomery’s Jeff Davis with a 25-20 win, the Wetumpka volleyball team struggled to find success the rest of the night losing 25-19, 25-20 and 25-19 to the former area rival.
In the second game, the Lady Volunteers led 11-8 and then pushed ahead 19-8 before being unable to return a Lady Indian offering.
Wetumpka’s Elizabeth Britton took the serve for the Lady Indians and rallied for three points, cutting the opponent’s lead to seven, 19-12.
Jeff Davis regained serve and added another two points to the tally.
Trailing 23-16 Wetumpka’s Jasmine Harrell cut the Lady Volunteer lead to four points after a three-point performance.
Harrell’s ace pushed the score to 23-19 in favor of the Lady Vols.
After a discussion involving substitutions led to Jeff Davis coach getting a yellow card from the official, the Lady Vols added two points to the tally to claim the win.
Thursday’s game was originally scheduled to be a tri-match with the Lady Volunteers and Central-Hayneville.
However, since Hayneville did not field a volleyball team, Thursday’s match was turned into a best-of-five affair between the Lady Indians and the Lady Volunteers.
Wetumpka — already sporting one area loss to Benjamin Russell — will step back into area play Sept. 8 against Auburn in a best-of-five series starting at 4:30 p.m. following that, Wetumpka will play host to 4A Catholic (Montgomery) and area foe Stanhope Elmore Sept. 9 and then will travel to Holtville Sept. 11.
The Lady Indians will close out the month of September by hosting Robert E. Lee and St. Jude Sept. 23, Brewbaker Tech and Greenville Sept. 25 and then traveling to Montgomery to face Jefferson Davis Sept. 30.
All matches are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m., with the junior varsity playing first.
