The final undecided seat for the City of Wetumpka’s next administration will be decided Tuesday in a runoff election between Kathy Holt and Kevin Robbins, vying for the District 3 post.
In the city’s Aug. 26 municipal election, a 4-candidate race in the district resulted in 155 votes for Holt, 137 for Robbins, 40 for Elisabeth Sheldon and 19 for Andrew Powell. Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the votes in the district, a runoff was mandated.
Holt said she would like to work toward strengthening the city’s infrastructure, enhance Wetumpka’s economic growth, support education and provide additional support for law enforcement.
“Creating a stronger infrastructure and promoting economic growth are essential for making Wetumpka the better place to live,” she said. “But without community supported law enforcement and a progressive education system it will not be a complete success.”
Robbins said he wants to see an increased focus on industrial growth, additional recreational facilities for all ages, further development of the senior center, support of the police and fire departments and tourism in the city.
“Much of the past focus has been on retail growth, but we also need to focus on industrial growth,” he said. “And I support continued development of the sports complex, but feel it is important to provide recreational facilities for everyone in the city not just those involved in sports.
“I want Wetumpka to be a destination city, known for its safe living, good jobs and recreational opportunities,” said Robbins.
Robbins graduated from Wetumpka High in 1998 and is a lifelong resident of Wetumpka. He is a licensed insurance agent in the area of property and casualty insurance and life insurance.
He is recently associated with Ross Insurance Agency and is presently associated with Southern Abstract and Title. Robbins previously served as youth minister at Central Baptist Church and at Rockford Baptist Church.
Wetumpka has been Holt’s home for most of her life and she is a Wetumpka High graduate. She attended Auburn University and is a graduate of Faulkner Uni-versity, where she received a degree in business administration.
She has more than 33 years of service with the State of Alabama. During that time she has held positions with the Alabama Department of Corrections, State Finance Department, Alabama State Department of Education, the Attorney General’s Office and the Governor’s Office.
Holt is a member of the Elmore County Historical Society, Elmore County Re-publican Committee, Republi-can State Executive Com-mittee and First Baptist Church.
“Wetumpka is a very historical community, rich with people with initiative and skills ready to take on the new growth we’re experiencing,” she said.
Voting in District 3 will be from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Fain Community Center on Cotton Street.
City officials will be sworn into office during the council’s Nov. 3 meeting. In addition to the winner of the District 3 race, new office holders will be Mayor Jerry Willis, District 1 Councilman Ken Hammock, District 2 Councilman Lewis E. Wash-ington Sr., District 4 Councilman Chris Carter and District 5 Councilman Greg Jones.
