The Wetumpka Fire Department received a $2,000 check for its firefighters association from Recon Builders on Friday.
Gary Carter of Recon Builders Inc. said the donation is for the WFD’s support in helping to rebuild after the January tornado. Recon Builders helps restore and remodel structures affected by disasters.
Wetumpka fire chief Greg Willis said the firefighters association helps those in need after being affected by disasters and with public education.
“I know that we have some first responders who were impacted by the tornado who have sort of been busy helping other people recover and could use some assistance, so I would anticipate some of this money going to help some of those folks,” Willis said.
Willis said the association also donates money to firefighters from other departments who were injured on the job.
Willis said the donation means a lot to the department especially because funding has dwindled.
“Years past, we had a lot of money coming in from different sources,” Willis said. “We’ve seen some of the monies that we would receive (diminish) whether it would be the state tightening up or the (Elmore County) commission. It just blows me away that people continue to give this way.”
