Edgewood Academy announced athletic director Darryl Free will be taking over the softball program.

During his two years at Edgewood, Free has taken the football team from one win to an 8-4 record and an appearance in the AISA-AA state semifinal game. In boys’ basketball, Free took a program that won three games in 2016-2017 to a 22-5 record this year, including the AISA-AA state championship.

“Coach Free has a long record of coaching excellence,” Edgewood headmaster Jay Adams said in a release. “He understands how to inspire our athletes to commit to a team vision and work relentlessly to achieve team goals, and I’m glad he decided to step into this role for the school and our athletes.”

Edgewood’s softball team has won 90 games in its last two seasons. The Wildcats won the AISA-AA state championship, their second consecutive state title under former coach Mark Segrest.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to lead our softball team,” Free said. “We have many amazing girls in this program, and I look forward to continuing our recent success.”
