Denice Pittman and her sister Cherryl Knighten were in dog heaven Saturday as their business Tiers of Sweetness hosted an adoption event for the Humane Society of Elmore County Animal Shelter.
But they have always been in dog heaven. The business started in 2008 as Pittman was making cakes for dogs while working full-time as a hairdresser.
“I took a cake decorating class,” Pittman said. “Originally it was going to be a bakery just for pets, but God had a different plan and so we have Tiers of Sweetness.”
The small bakery still offers pet options. Even on Saturday they had dog-friendly options available. It was a good thing as some new dog parents were adopting puppies. At least four puppies went home with new parents. The sisters pledged half their sales from the bakery and to match adoption fees from the event to the shelter.
Hosting the adoption event in The Alley just across from the bakery is also another way for the sisters to help the shelter without taking home any more animals.
“We have four dogs and can’t add anybody else,” Pittman said. “This is the next best thing. We want to support them and help them find homes for pets.”
Knighten doesn’t have a dog currently.
“I have a cat now,” Knighten said. “Goliath would not be happy with a dog or another cat as far as that goes.”
