Despite being swept by Wetumpka in the regular season, there was plenty of fight from Stanhope Elmore all the way until the final whistle of Tuesday’s Class 6A Area 5 volleyball tournament. The Mustangs lost the first two sets but did not go away easily, forcing the third set into a 23-23 tie.

The last two seasons for the Wetumpka football have been two of the most successful seasons in the program’s history. But despite being one of the best teams in Class 6A across the state, there were some clear gaps between Wetumpka and the other top-tier programs.

It has almost been a full year since Stanhope Elmore marched into Opelika with hopes of a Class 6A Region 3 title only to walk out disappointed at the hands of a 59-21 defeat. The loss dropped the Mustangs to third place in the region, dooming them to a first-round playoff loss.

If you have ever had a small argument with me over sports or anything else, there’s a good chance you know I like to play devil’s advocate — probably too much. It’s to the point where it annoys everyone else.

Stanhope Elmore had more miscues in the fourth quarter than it wanted, leaving the door open for Wetumpka to send Friday night’s rivalry game into overtime. However, the Mustangs sealed their second straight victory over Wetumpka when the defensive line teamed up for a fourth-down sack on We…

There may not be anyone who has forgotten last year’s miracle play by Stanhope Elmore’s Marlon Hunt to knock off top-ranked Wetumpka. One would expect the Indians to have that play on a loop in their heads this week as they prepare for revenge. But Wetumpka coach Tim Perry said his team is f…
