A Deatsville mom got more than she bargained for when she purchased a package of cheese slices on Wednesday from a Dollar General in Slapout.

When she got home to unload her groceries she noticed something odd about the cheese slices. They were dotted with tiny specs.

Rachael Felder thought there was something wrong with the wrapper on the cheese so then she checked another slice.

“So I opened it and realized it was all in side the slice and it’s hard,” Felder told the Herald on Friday. “I pulled out a piece and rolled it between my fingers to see if it would break, but the piece stuck me in my finger.”

Felder thinks the pieces are glass, although a Kraft Foods executive told her that is was crystalization from the cheese getting too hot.

“They told me if we put the pieces under water they would dissolve and that this was just my pack of cheese as well. I put the pieces under water and they did not dissolve,” Felder said.

She also said she found three other packs of 16-count Kraft American cheese slices with the same problem.

“I just want everyone to be safe,” Felder said. “I would like to see the slices  recalled to make sure it doesn’t happen to someone else.”

Felder said she contacted the Dollar General store in Slapout and they assured her that the packages of cheese slices would be removed from the shelves.

A spokesperson with Kraft Foods said what may appear to be glass in the slices may be “lactose crystals” or “phosphate crystals.”

“When there is too much lactose or phosphate in the cheese, or if the cheese loses too much moisture, crystals can form on the surface and appear to look like glass,” Joyce Hodel with Kraft Foods told the Herald. “…we don’t recommend eating cheese with crystals because it can cause discomfort, and we don’t want our consumers to have an unpleasant experience with our product.

“Consumers who see crystals in any Kraft cheese should contact us so we can investigate and provide a refund.”
