In a three-day span, Wetumpka Police captured suspects in two separate drug-related incidents, including an employee of the Alabama Department of Corrections.
WPD received a call Tuesday morning from McDonald’s reporting a subject had been asleep in the parking lot since about 4 a.m.
“An officer responded and after talking to the subject determined that he appeared to be inebriated,” Detective Mike Hafley said. “He was arrested for public intoxication and when the officer inventoried the vehicle, he found a package of marijuana in the trunk. The 1/2 pound of marijuana was taped up in a tight package and there was also $648 cash.”
Michael Anderson, 28, of Prattville, an Alabama Department of Corrections officer, was charged with public intoxication and possession of marijuana.
Anderson is a corrections officer at Staton Correctional Facility and has been with ADOC since March 2010.
An ADOC spokeswoman said, “personnel action is pending at this time” as to Anderson’s current employment status with ADOC following the charges.
In a separate incident, Hafley said an officer was in the vicinity of the Wetumpka YMCA when he heard gunshots Sunday night.
“Several black males had been in the gym playing basketball,” Hafley said. “Then they apparently got into a disagreement.”
Three males in one car allegedly shot into Todderick Murphy’s car and fled. Murphy’s car was damaged and he was unable to flee.
“Our K9 hit hard on the trunk and front passenger side,” Hafley said. “We retrieved 2 ounces or marijuana individually packaged for sale. It was in 20-30 individual packs in a zip lock bag with more in a mason jar. There was also $460 cash.”
Murphy, 22, was charged with first-degree possession of marijuana.
Warrants have been issued on the three alleged shooters – twins Legarrion and Lethelrerion Chillous, 22, and LaJuan Simpson, 21, all of Montgomery.
“We’re very proud of the efforts of our department,” said Lt. Ed Gumpf. “Our patrol officers did a good job with this and turned it all over to our investigations division.”
