The Slapout community is mourning Friday after a Holtville High School student died in a crash Thursday afternoon on Lightwood Road. The accident also left a 14-year-old, 15-year-old, 16-year-old and a 17-year old injured.

News of the wreck spread quickly Thursday afternoon and evening. Prayers were held at sporting events involving Holtville teams. Other Elmore County schools posted messages of support on social media.

Holtville High School principal Sean Kreauter addressed the situation in a message Thursday evening.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share the heartbreaking news of a student's passing [Thursday],” Kreauter said in a post on Facebook. “Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this profound loss.”

ALEA issued a release Thursday evening stating a wreck claimed the life of a Deatsville juvenile in a single vehicle crash.

“The 14-year-old was fatally injured when the 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pick-up, the teen was a passenger in, left the roadway and collided with a tree,” ALEA said. “The teen was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

ALEA said all four teens including the 16-year-old driver of Deatsville were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

School staff said family and students to be remembered at this time and help is available.

“We need our amazing community to rally around them and support them,” Kreauter said. “[Friday] morning, dedicated counselors will be available to provide support and a listening ear for any students who may need it.”

ALEA said the crash was still under investigation.
