Six 'smelly cats' found in a dump have been named after characters from "Friends".

The kittens were all suffering from severe malnutrition, flea, worm infestations and eye infections.

They were rescued from a dump in Eyemouth Recycling Centre in Scotland.

Borders Pet Rescue nursed the four-week-old kittens back to health after they were rescued.

Inspired by their strong bond, the three males and three females were named after the TV show "Friends" - Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, Ross, Joey and Chandler - which featured a song 'Smelly Cat'.

Centre manager Kim McNeill said a member of the public contacted them after finding the kittens at the recycling centre in a "heartbreaking scene" on 27 May.

She said: "While working at the site, he found a tiny litter of kittens abandoned in the rubbish tip. Thankfully, he had rehomed cats through us before and knew exactly who to call.

"When the six kittens arrived, they were estimated to be around four weeks old.

"All were suffering from severe malnutrition, flea and worm infestations, and painful eye infections. They were frightened, weak, and understandably wary of human contact."

Kim said they "acted quickly" with their vet team providing immediate medical treatment for their eyes and taking care of the parasites.

"But their journey to recovery didn’t stop there. These kittens needed more than medicine - they needed time, patience, and love.

"Fortunately, one of our amazing foster carers stepped in and gave the kittens a safe, nurturing environment where they could begin to trust again.

"Over several weeks, they slowly gained confidence, learned how to play, and experienced the warmth of a home for the first time."

Once they turned eight weeks old, and became healthy the rescue began looking for their forever homes.

Kim added: "Inspired by their strong bond and the laughter they brought to us, we named them after characters from the sitcom 'Friends' —three girls- Monica, Pheobe, Rachel and three boys - Ross, Joey and Chandler.

"Their story captured hearts on social media, helping us raise funds (£4000) for their veterinary care and spread the word about their search for loving families."

In the sitcom, Phoebe famously sang a song 'Smelly Cat' about a mistreated pet.

The six kittens have now been adopted into "wonderful homes."
