Payton Jackson, 9, and McKenna Privett, 10, were inside the GAB Salon in downtown Wetumpka one day talking about putting together a lemonade stand to earn a little extra money over the summer.

Jackson, who attends Dalraida Elementary in Montgomery, and Privett, who attends Wetumpka Middle School, were talking with salon owner Paula Sergeant about the idea.

ā€œI thought this would be a great way to teach them about money, but then also planted the idea about raising money for the humane shelter since they both love animals,ā€ Sergeant said. ā€œThey fell in love the idea.ā€

Starting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, the young entreprenuers set up their tables outside of the salon, which is located at the intersection of Bridge and Main streets.

Within minutes, they were flooded with customers.

And their donation bucket started to fill with dollar bills.

ā€œMrs. Paula helped us with the idea about donating the money to the shelter,ā€ said Payton, who has two dogs Rayne and Tina.

By the time the duo ran out of lemonade, they had raised $100 for the shelter.

ā€œThey need food, water and shelter, but cats need milk, too,ā€ added McKenna, who has a pet Guinea pig named Lizzie.

ā€œWe had a lot of people stop by. We sold a lot of lemonade,ā€ McKenna said.

Sergeant was so proud of their success.

ā€œThis was a great experience for them, and I know they had the best time out there selling lemonade and raising money for the humane shelter,ā€ she said.
