The municipal elections are almost here, and Monday is the last day to register to vote.

If you aren’t registered, now is the time. The easiest way is to go to alabamavotes.gov and scroll down to the Voter Registration button. To register, voters need their address, last four digits of their Social Security Number or their driver’s license.

While this isn’t a big presidential election like last year, the city elections are still very important. Your local government is the most impactful government in your daily life. Your mayor and your council member make decisions every day that impact your utilities, what businesses are coming in and what laws are in the books.

But alongside the impact, local elections are part of every resident’s civic duty. We all owe it to ourselves to cast who we believe should lead our cities. Because the council and mayor are our local representatives. They represent us not just in town, but also when they attend any state meetings or programs. It’s important to have a voice in that.

Local elections also tend to have less of a turnout than national elections. And that’s a problem. Lower turnout means those elected might not be fully representing the community and its wishes.

So, this isn’t an election to skip out on. That being said, even if you are registered to vote, start preparing now. It’s not a bad idea to check and make sure you know your polling location and your district. This information can be found at alabamavotes.gov through My Voting Information.
